The series starred veteran actor Leif Erickson and John Cannon, owner of the ranch called "El Gran Chaparral" located in the desert of Sonora (now Arizona). It was developed in the old American West was about the lives of two families: the Cannon and Montoya.
Cannon's family consisted of John, a burly and tough ex-Army officer of the American Union, adventurous settler now determined to fight nature and Apache to keep his ranch up (something made clear when he first saw the large property: "This is my country and the tame"), and refined Mexican wife Victoria Montoya, daughter of a powerful rancher in the region nicknamed "The Lion of Sonora, Don Sebastian Montoya. Initially, John's wife was Annalee (Joan Caulfield) who get to wilderness area named the property as "El Gran Chaparral", but was later killed by the Apaches. Annalee and John's son was a sensitive and rookie Billy Blue, and with them was the loyal brother of John, Buck Cannon, committed to his work at the ranch (although easily distracted), more enthusiastic and impulsive that its brother and the sole of the Cannon with a great sense of humor.
Table of actors was completed with the fun and dissolute Manolo Montoya, commonly called Manolito, brother of Victoria. The latter had come to reside in The High Chaparral, because he disliked being treated as "the boss's son" in the farm of his father, Don Sebastian Montoya, who was played by Frank Silvera during the first seasons of the series, while between 1970 and 1971 Gilbert Roland was responsible for the role of Don Domingo Montoya, brother of Don Sebastian.
effective also noted as the foreman Sam Butler side, the cowboys Joe Butler (brother of above) and Peter, and Cowboy as the loyal butler. Characters
sporadic but outstanding were: Apache chief Cochise (Nino Cochise, Paul Fix and Michael Keep) which is the main Apache leader, the healer apache Nock-Ay-Del (X Brands and George Keyman) who tends to be neutral and some Once considered to Cannon, deputy apache Soldier (James Almanzar) that is the enemy of the Cannon, the half-breed Pawnee-Anglo Wind (Rudy Ramos) who would be the last to join the Cannon ranch as an assistant, and Perlita Mexican hustler (Marie Gomez), "bride" Manolito and many other inhabitants of the region.
Often, residents of the High Chaparral in conflict with the Apaches or be protected against bandits, army deserters, etc. The series certainly stands out for its beautiful natural locations and also for its many funny situations in which the characters look naturally many virtues as defects.
